When does a notch behave like a crack?

چکیده

The characteristic asymptotic fields at the tip of sharp, semi-infinite cracks and notches are first compared with corresponding features present in selected finite bodies (edge cracks and notches). This gives an explicit view of the gradual divergence of the semiinfinite and finite problem solutions as the observation point becomes remote from the tip. Hence, upper bounds for the local plastic zone to be characterized by the singular field are known. Asymptotic solutions for semi-infinite rounded features are introduced, whose remote fieldsmay bematched to the sharp singular fields through themediumof the corresponding generalized stress intensity factor. Thus the semi-infinite sharp and rounded problems converge remotely but diverge as the apex of the feature is approached. This comparison sets a lower bound for loads at which the outer boundary of the plastic zone is characterized by the singular field. Thus, the range of loads for the plastic zones to be controlled by the singular solutions are derived. We then proceed to compare critically the nature of the semi-infinite sharp notch and semi-infinite crack states of stress, defining the circumstances in which these are alike. All these elements considered together enable the closeness of various notch plastic zones to that of the classical semi-infinite crack to be gauged.

A ‘crack-like’ notch analogue for a safe-life fretting fatigue design methodology

A B S T R A C T Various analogies have recently been proposed for comparing the stress fields induced in fretting fatigue contact situations, with those of a crack and a sharp or a rounded notch, resulting in a degree of uncertainty over which model is most appropriate in a given situation. However, a simple recent approach of Atzori–Lazzarin for infinite-life fatigue design in the presence of ...

STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS FOR AN INTERIOR GRIFFITH CRACK OPENED BY HEATED WEDGE IN A STRIP WHOSE EDGES ARE NORMAL TO CRACK AXIS

After second world war, we have seen a very rapid development of Thermoelasticity stimulated by various engineering sciences. As we know, structures behave in different fashion under climate variation and the most responsible factor for these variations is heat which falls through and causes deformation of the body. A considerable progress in the field of aircraft and machine structures, mainly...

Charpy impact energy of functionally graded steels in the form of crack arrester configuration was investigated. Functionally graded steels which contain layers of ferrite, austenite, bainite and/or martensite could be produced by electroslag remelting. The results showed that notch tip position and the distances of notch with respect to the bainite and martensite layers significantly affect th...

Short Crack Initiation and Growth at 600oC in Notched Specimens of Inconel718

The natural initiation and growth of short cracks in Inconel 718 U-notch specimens has been studied at 600C in air. U notches were introduced through broaching, and hardness traces and optical microscopy on cross sections through the U notch broaching showed that the broaching process had introduced a deformed, work hardened layer. Fatigue tests were conducted under load control using a 1-1-1-1...

Effects of mineral content on the fracture properties of equine cortical bone in double-notched beams.

We recently developed a method to measure cortical bone fracture initiation toughness using a double-notched beam in four-point bending. This method was used to test the hypothesis that mineralization around the two notch roots is correlated with fracture toughness and crack extension (physical damage). Total energy absorbed to failure negatively correlated with average mineralization of the be...
